Protecting Your Pictures and Mirrors: A Packing Guide That Works

Your family photos, artwork, and mirrors hold memories and add personality to your home. These fragile items deserve special attention when you’re packing for a household move. With the right supplies and techniques, you can transport your cherished wall décor safely to your new place.

Gather the Right Supplies

Before you start wrapping, collect everything you need. You’ll want packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape, cardboard sheets, and specialty picture boxes. Heavy-duty boxes designed for mirrors and artwork provide extra protection compared to standard moving boxes.

Measure your largest pieces first, and purchase boxes slightly larger than you need. For smaller-framed items, you can pack several together in one box, as long as each piece is individually wrapped and protected.

The X-Tape Technique

Start by placing masking tape in an X pattern across the glass surface of each frame or mirror. This simple step serves an essential purpose. If the glass cracks during transport, the tape holds the pieces together and prevents them from scattering. This technique significantly reduces the risk of damage and makes cleanup easier if breakage occurs.

Use painter’s tape or masking tape rather than packing tape directly on glass, as these are easier to remove without leaving residue.

Wrap Each Piece Carefully

Lay out a sheet of packing paper about twice the size of your frame on a flat, clean surface. Place the item face down in the center. Cut a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the frame and tape it over the glass side for added protection.

Wrap the entire piece in bubble wrap, paying special attention to the corners. These areas are most likely to get bumped and damaged during a move. Secure the bubble wrap with tape, then finish with another layer of packing paper wrapped snugly around the whole package.

Box Them Up Right

Line the bottom of your box with crumpled packing paper to create a cushioned base. Slide your wrapped items into the box vertically, never flat. Fill any gaps with additional paper to prevent shifting during transport.

Mark the glass side of the box clearly with a marker or fragile tape. Write “This Side Up” and “Fragile” on multiple sides so anyone handling the box knows to take extra care.

Loading and Unloading Tips

When loading the moving truck, place picture and mirror boxes upright against a solid surface, such as the truck wall. Wedge them between heavy, stable items, such as mattresses or sofas, to prevent tipping. Never stack anything heavy on top of these boxes, and avoid laying them flat where they could flex and crack under pressure.

During unloading, carry these boxes inside first and set them in a safe location away from foot traffic. Don’t lean them against walls where they might be knocked over by other furniture coming through the door. Wait until the move is complete before hanging anything to avoid accidents during the busy unloading process.

Handle With Care

Your pictures and mirrors represent moments and memories worth protecting. Taking a little extra time to pack them properly ensures they’ll arrive at your new home ready to hang. With careful preparation, you can display your favorite pieces exactly as you remember them.
